Case Study #1: The Scholium Group

Every year at the end of March, the Scholium Group PLC (Scholium) financial year ends. Its wholly owned operating subsidiary, Shapero Rare Books Limited (SRBL) is one of the rare publicly listed retail-centric booksellers in the World. Public companies are not always bastions of business best practices or even examples of the best financial performance in an industry. But for the most part their performance is transparent and very revealing to those who are interested and know what to look for. From this review of Scholium’s 2022 statements, and specifically SRBL, the article provides a rubric from which independent Rare & Antiquarian Booksellers devise performance baselines, basis for financial comparison and benchmarks for performance in 2023 and beyond.
